Too much sodium is bad for you, we can all agree on that. The FDA says 2,400mg a day is the maximum. Going over increases your risk of heart disease goes up. So it makes sense that having a super low sodium diet, under 1,200mg a day, would be beneficial. Not so, according to a recent study commissioned by the Institute of Medicine and organized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study found no benefit to such a diet and in fact found that in some people a low sodium diet could be just as dangerous as a high sodium diet. Like many things in life, moderation is the key.
